Land, sea and sky become points of departure, translated through sweeping gestures, layered colour and an intuitive response to light and atmosphere. Both dramatic and subtle shifts in observed weather patterns inform the emotional and spatial character of the work, not as direct representations, but as sensations and memories held within the body. Working instinctively across multiple paintings, Hillier builds and disrupts surfaces through painting, print, layering and reworking, allowing each action to inform the next and the composition to unfold through an interplay of intention, intuition and chance. Colour operates as both structure and atmosphere, with contrasting tones creating depth and movement while darker passages anchor areas of light. Translucent layers reveal and obscure earlier gestures, while acts of wiping and removal leave traces of the painting’s evolution within the surface. Hillier embraces uncertainty, allowing marks to be interrupted, concealed and reasserted, creating a tension between control and spontaneity, clarity and ambiguity, concealment and exposure.
