Her work seeks to examine the relationship between external environments and internal experiences, where landscape becomes both a physical place and a space for memory, emotion and reflection. Just as weather patterns continually transform the land and sea, our own thoughts and feelings are constantly moving and changing. Through abstraction, Hillier draws on these parallels. The work becomes a platform where the external and internal can meet, inviting a slower form of looking. She offers a space beyond logic, where intuition and feeling allow us to connect with ourselves, encouraging a deeper sense of belonging. Hillier pushes the boundaries of methodical screen-printing by introducing elements of painting. The dialogue between the controlled, layered process of printing and the more intuitive qualities of painting creates space for experimentation, movement and spontaneity. Through this evolving approach, Hillier seeks to explore a deeper connection with the natural world and herself. She invites the viewer to pause and consider subtle beauty, rhythm and changing presence. Working simultaneously across both disciplines, Hillier builds her compositions through layers of exposed brush marks, textures and abstract forms, drawing inspiration from time spent within vast open landscapes and seascapes. Colour and mark are gradually accumulated, with each layer responding to the one before it, until the composition reaches what she describes as a natural resting place.
